The majority of the paediatric activity in the world takes place in countries where infectious diseases like malaria and HIV, but also anaemia and malnutrition claim many thousands of lives on a daily basis. Despite contributions by organisations like the World Health Organisation (WHO), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, the scale of these paediatric problems is not significantly reduced worldwide. To tackle these problems in a constructive way, what is needed is more attention from the clinical profession (paediatricians) - and the scientific world, as well as a lot of donations.
In the Netherlands, we see a quick development towards a multi-ethnic society where paediatricians and other physicians are confronted with previously rare - often tropical - diseases and uncommon illness perceptions. An excess mortality has been established among children of non- Dutch parents. So the question urges itself whether in the light of these shifts in society, the Dutch healthcare system should not be modified. This requires funds, too.
